This year’s trial course will be led by Professor Peter Müller.
The branch of mathematics known as analysis deals primarily with the study of functions. But the quality of functions can vary depending on the specific problem being addressed. Often, “less good” functions can be approximated by “better” ones.
An important example is the Weierstrass approximation theorem, which states that Every continuous function can be approximated as closely as desired by a polynomial function.
In this year’s trial course, participants will learn the concepts that are needed to prove this theorem, including strong induction, continuity and the supremum norm. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding what constitutes mathematically correct proof.
The trial course gives high school students the opportunity to gain an early insight into university-level mathematics studies.
